Our History

Sugar Creek Lutheran Church was organized by Norwegian immigrants
on August 6, 1849. The first church building was erected in 1851 on the
knoll where the Hanson gravestone now stands. The building was
18’ X 24’ and had no steeple. In 1881 a new building was dedicated
which now is known as the “Old Church”. This building is still used 
for worship (8:00 am service, Memorial Day through Labor Day) and 
occasional weddings. An education wing was added in 1960. The
present sanctuary was built in 1978. A second floor to the
educational wing was added in 1992.

The members of Sugar Creek have been willing to follow God’s
leading into uncharted waters. Sugar Creek was one of the founding 
congregations of Luther College in 1861. Together with the Skoponong 
congregation in Palmyra, we started Williams Bay Lutheran in 1949.
In 1974, Sugar Creek underwrote the production of the film,
“The Book That Would Not Burn”. In 1981, Sugar Creek was the
prime mover behind the Ecumenical Ministry to Mature Adults (EMMA) 
in Walworth County. As a gift to the community for God’s blessings
over 150 years of ministry, Sugar Creek birthed the
Family Resource Center in 2000. That continues today as Family
Building Blocks under the umbrella of the Community Action Program.

Over our 155 years, we have been served by 21 pastors.
Two sons and two daughters of the congregation
have entered the ordained ministry.
